The White Sapote, native to Mexico and Central America, is basically a custard machine! The flavor of the fruit is sweet and tropical, often described as a combination of banana, peach, and vanilla. The flesh of the fruit is creamy white, hence the name "white sapote," and it is soft and juicy with a custard-like texture.
The white sapote produces an abundance of delicious fruits, which are roundish/ovalish shaped, about the size of a small apple or large plum. It has a thin, greenish-yellow skin that turns pale yellow when fully ripe. It also contains several seeds of different sizes.
Because the skin is so thin, the fruit is usually harvested when it is full, but still green on the plant. Let it sit at room temperature for a few days until it is ripe.
Plant Care
White sapote prefers well-draining soil rich in organic matter and likes consistent watering although it is intolerant of flooding. The plant prefers full sun (for highest production), but can also thrive in part shade.
- Propagation Method: Grown from seed.
- Fertility: Self-fertilizes.
- Temperature Tolerance: Ideal Minimum: 15 C - Minimum Tolerated (briefly): 5 C
