Also known as Suriname cherry, Brazilian cherry, Cayenne cherry.
The Pitanga plant produces small, cherry-sized fruit that are deep red or purplish in color and have a sweet, tangy flavor. These delicious berries can be eaten fresh off the plant, used to make jams and jellies, or incorporated into a variety of desserts and baked goods.
In addition to its tasty fruit, the Pitanga plant also has medicinal properties. The leaves of the plant contain compounds that are known to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. These properties make the plant useful for treating a variety of ailments, including sore throats, colds, and flu.
It can be grown as a small, compact shrub or trained to grow into a larger tree.
Plant Care
The Pitanga plant is a low-maintenance shrub that prefers full sun or partial shade, well-draining soil, and regular fertilization during its growing season. It only requires watering during its first year of growth and occasional pruning.
- Propagation Method: Grown from seed, will produce fruit in 1 year with proper care.
- Fertility: Self-fertilizes, but better with a second plant (cross-pollination improves fruit set).
- Temperature Tolerance: Ideal Minimum: 15 C - Minimum Tolerated (briefly): 10 C
