FAQs

✛ Do tropical trees grow in Canada?

Good news! It is possible to grow tropical plants in Canada.  There are many people who are already enjoying their piece of tropical paradise and you can too.  Join the club! All they need is proper care. Keep your tropical plants in a warm sunny spot indoors or in a greenhouse during winter and cooler days, and you can take them outside during the summer to enjoy the sun and warm breeze.

✛ Can I keep fruit trees indoors?

Yes, you can grow these tropical fruit trees indoors. Place them in a sunny spot and make sure to water and feed regularly. They will grow perfectly in containers and the size of the container will determine the size of the plant.

How are fruit trees packaged and shipped?

Our fruit trees travel from the Dominican Republic to us in Ottawa.  They are prepared for shipping and then are delivered straight to your door. They are packaged specifically to avoid damage. First, we heavily trim and somewhat prune our plants to prep for shipping, which reduces the impact of the transit time on the plant's health. This means that it will have little foliage, but the size remains as expected and new growth of foliage will start soon after it is replanted.

To ensure proper shipping and compliance with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) regulations, they are packed as bare-rooted plants, so we remove the soil and wrap them in coco coir to keep the roots moist during the trip.  Finally, we wrap them in flexible cardboard paper to avoid shaking and damage inside the box that we pack each plant into. Please ensure that you have a home ready for them where they can grow and thrive.

All orders are shipped via Canada Post or UPS.

✛ What to do when I receive my bare root plants?

When you receive the plant, soak the roots in water for a couple of hours. This will hydrate the tree and help reduce stress caused when the soil dries around the roots after its planted.

It is important that you have selected the container or spot in which you will plant your trees. If you will use a container, make sure to select an adequate size based on the plant size you ordered.

Also, make sure to use good quality soil that is well-draining and fluffy enough to allow for the bare roots to settle in and easily grow without too much strain.  We suggest amending your soil with coco coir or another growing media of your choice to improve aeration and water retention.

Once it is planted, water thoroughly to ensure the roots are moist and allow for the soil to settle around them.  Waiting for the plant to settle in before fertilizing is ideal. After that, we suggest using a fertilizer that will help your plant produce green vegetative growth first.

Ensure that your plant receives good sun exposure and air flow (protect from strong winds).

✛ When are Pre-Orders shipped?

Pre-orders made between October and April are shipped starting in May.

October-May: Due to weather conditions, you will be able to place pre-orders during this time, but all plants will be shipped starting May (as soon as weather permits).

✛ Do you have other plant sizes?

✛ What is coco coir?

Coco coir is the non-fibrous, spongy, corky material that holds together the coir fiber in coconut husk. It is a 100% organic and all-natural and substance which is used to produce many products, one of the main ones being a soilless growing medium used in gardening.

✛ How can I use coco coir in my garden?

Use it to sprout seeds: Coco coir is a fluffy growing media, which is perfect for the delicate seedlings root system.  Once you get the first set of true leaves, you can transplant into your preferred potting soil.

Use as part of your soil mix: Add coco coir to improve your soil mix. You can add around 30% of coco coir to your mix to reap the benefits.

✛ Is coconut coir toxic to pets?

No. Coconut coir is an all-natural and non-toxic product which is safe for pets. It is often confused with a product that can be toxic to dogs and other animals: cocoa mulch.

✛ Does coconut coir provide nutrients to the plants?

One of the great benefits of coco coir is that it is a nutrient neutral growing medium, which allows you to use your preferred mix of nutrients for your plants. As such, add nutrient-enriched water or add nutrients and fertilizers into your potting mix for best results.

✛ Can I add fertilizers to any of the coco products?

Yes! Coconut coir is an amazing growing medium that is nutrient neutral, which means that it does not have nutritional value aside from what is added to it.  This is great because it allows you to add your preferred cocktail of fertilizers as needed by your plants.  Feel free to add any fertilizers to our products, but make sure to read the instructions for chemical fertilizers to ensure you are applying it correctly.

✛ Is NOBOA coco coir washed?

Our coco coir is washed three times with fresh water to ensure our product has an EC: < 0.5 mS/Cm, which means that the level of salt within the product is very low making it safe and of great quality for your plants.

✛ Where do we ship products?

We offer shipping anywhere within Canada where Canada Post and UPS can deliver.  Shipping cost is automatically calculated during checkout.
